March Madness
Haha, fooooled yoooou! This post will have absolutely nothing to do with basketball! (Though it has been a crazy tournament, I'll save that for another post...)
March Madness in this case refers to the madness that has been my March so far. When I last checked in I was prepping for my phone interview with Columbia, and for knee surgery. Thankfully both went well. Spending a week at home with nothing to do isn't really all it's cracked up to be when you throw in the fact that you can't really get up that often. But the knee is doing much better now and I'm actually walking pretty much okay.
As for the job search, I actually just got back from visiting First Pres. in Columbia for the weekend. I was really excited to go, and I've been really excited about the position. Basically, I was looking to fall in love with the church and the city. Sadly, that wasn't really how things turned out. This may seem like a painfully obvious statement, but Columbia is in The South. I am not a "Southern" kind of guy. I knew both those things going into this, but I really thought that it wouldn't be that big of a deal. As it turns out, I had a great time interacting with the kids I'd be working with, but just wasn't that excited about the prospect of living down there for several years. So, now it's time to pray hard and see if God's trying to change my mind for me, while I keep looking at other things. First up is a church in Williamsburg, so we'll see how that goes...
On the home front, we're getting ready for MODGNIK, our big spring retreat with lots of other PCA churches from across Virginia. I'm leading the worship this year with our high school worship team. We're all pretty siked, and I'm really thrilled for the kids to have this chance. There's going to be around 500 people at this thing, so it's a really big deal. But, we still have a lot of practicing to do!
As one last interesting side note, I'm 99% sure I flew down to Columbia on the same plane with Steve Spurrier. I thought it was him, but then said to myself, "No way, what the heck would Spurrier be doing on an Independence Air flight to Columbia?" I found out when I got there that he had been hired as the University of SC's football coach, and he held his first practice on Saturday. So, yep, that was probably him. The funny thing is that he was complaining about the plane being full. You'd think he could afford to fly first class on a bigger airline after all the money he stole, uh, I mean "earned" from the Redskins. I told every USC fan that I met that they were welcome to him. Would have been an interesting guy to sit next to on an hour long flight though...
